I’m not sure wha kind of bees these are or if they even are bees versus a fly mimic. There is something about them, and I can’t figure out what it is, that makes them look kind of different from the honey bees I’m used to seeing, like the one above.
The purple in this photo was so bright and had so many highligts it was very distracting. I tried a burn brush and then a darking brush to tone it down but neither produced a satisfactory look. What I ended up doing was to selectively desaturate individual colors so the bee took center stage and the flower and background became less obtrusive.
Taken at a differnt angle I had less problems with the brightness of the flower.
So those were the bees mentioned in the title and here is the flower, an aster from my garden.

Hi David, I’m not great with bees, but it’s definitely not a fly. Maybe a longhorn bee? Hard to say.

There are so many different kinds of bees (over 400 in my state alone!) that telling them apart can be hard. Great camera work, regardless. 🙂
